The Power of Exceptional Care

No one in the field of nursing knows how to change lives better than Margarita, a nursing supervisor. “In surgery we fix broken bodies. We bring people back from the dead and then they walk out of our hospital on their own—better than when they came in.” Margarita enjoys working at UMass Memorial Medical Center because of the community feeling she gets from her coworkers. Many of the employees that she works with have been here for their entire careers, and she feels that it is great to work with people who are motivated and enjoy coming to their job every day.

Growing up, Margarita always knew she wanted to work with sick and injured people. After gaining experience in a variety of nursing roles at area hospitals, Margarita came to UMass Memorial as an OR registered nurse in 2006. From there, she became a clinical coordinator and was promoted to service line manager for Surgery.

As a supervisor, Margarita always teaches that “[we] are a team and are successful because of [our] ability to function so well together.” Due to her experiences outside of the hospital network, Margarita finds it easy to empathize with those she supervises. She understands the importance of having technologically-advanced equipment available for her staff members, and works hard to keep their knowledge and expertise up-to-date.

Margarita describes the technical capabilities of UMass Memorial as being among the most advanced. “We have the prestige of being a Level One American College of Surgeons Credentialed Center of Excellence for Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery with Adjustable Banding and Gastric Bypass. In addition, we currently provide robotic procedures in gastro-urological, colorectal, and gynecologic and thoracic surgery. We are also one of the biggest total joint centers in the country [and are proud to be] a big vascular, neurology, obstetrics/gynecology center.”

Margarita likes to remind prospective candidates about the amazing opportunities that are available at UMass Memorial, including tuition reimbursement and the pay scale. She says that people often don’t realize that UMass Memorial salaries are quite comparable to the hospitals in Boston and the benefits offered are even better. She offers a strong recommendation for working at UMass Memorial.
