Beyond Bedside Care Roy always knew that he wanted to work with patients and provide excellent care that would truly make a difference in their lives. Roy’s entrance into the medical profession began in college as a pre-med student, but after working as a patient care assistant at UMass Memorial Medical Center, he quickly realized that his enjoyment of bedside care and dedication to helping patients did not require that he follow a pre-med schooling path – instead, he decided to pursue a nursing career. In 1990, Roy accepted a position at UMass Memorial as a registered nurse and he moved into a nurse clinician role in 2001. This transition has allowed Roy to not only continue to provide for his patients, but also to educate, train and mentor nurses on his floor. Although Roy’s initial interest in a career at UMass Memorial stemmed from its excellent reputation for quality care and the cutting-edge procedures we were performing, he quickly realized that UMass Memorial offered more than that. UMass Memorial has also provided Roy with the opportunity to begin a new project: develop a discharge education and coordination program for stroke patients. In this way, UMass Memorial has allowed Roy to continue to develop professionally while fulfilling his goal to positively affect the lives of his patients. | |
